Diabetes is a medical condition that is caused by elevated blood sugar, which is caused by a lack of insulin or insulin resistance. To diagnose diabetes, primary care physicians Dr. Esmilkrys B. Ramirez and Dr. Carlos Mella-Picel perform a simple blood test known as a fasting blood sugar screen. This blood test measures how much glucose is found in the blood. A reading of 100 or less indicates a healthy blood sugar level, 100 – 125 may indicate pre-diabetes, and 125 or higher could indicate that the person is likely diabetic.
When blood sugar levels remain high for consecutive months, our team may request an A1C blood test, which averages blood sugar levels over 2 – 3 months and can indicate whether your diabetes is under control or requires further medical care. How to Control Your Diabetes
