According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), women should have annual gynecological visits and Pap smears or Pap tests every three years. A Pap smear is a test that collects samples of cells from the cervix of a woman to determine whether human papilloma virus (HPV), precancer, or cancer cells exist within the cervix. How Is A Pap Smear Performed?
During your exam, a member of our team will gently insert a speculum into the opening of the vagina before quickly swiping the cervix with a long and narrow cotton swab. The entire procedure lasts mere seconds and will be carried out in a compassionate and discrete manner. The test should not be painful, though some women feel pressure from the speculum during the procedure. The swab will be sent to a lab for testing. If no negative cells are detected, no further tests will be needed. If your test detects abnormal cells, additional tests may be needed.
