What Is An EKG, and Why Is It Important?

An electrocardiogram or EKG is a diagnostic test that measures your heart activity. Your physician or, in some cases, urgent or emergency care provider may recommend an EKG if you are experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain, or an irregular heartbeat. Results from an EKG can help identify heart disease or conditions affecting the blood vessels or function of the heart. More than 84 million Americans are experiencing some form of cardiovascular disease yet are unaware until they become severe. Dr. Esmilkrys B. Ramirez and Dr. Carlos Mella-Picel have experienced primary care providers who take heart disease seriously and recommend EKGs anytime a heart condition is suspected. Contact one of our Chicago, IL area locations to learn more about our diagnostic exams and protocols.

What Abnormalities Might Indicate An Issue?

To perform your EKG, sensors will be taped to your chest, arms, and legs to take readings based on your heart activity. Abnormalities that might be detected during an EKG can include:

  • An irregular heartbeat
  • High or low electrolyte levels
  • Indications of a previous heart attack
  • Heart enlargement due to high blood pressure
  • Hypertrophy or abnormal thickness of the heart
  • Abnormal heart structure

I can’t say enough good things about Health Direction Medical Center! I have been coming here for almost 2 years and they’ve helped me problem solve health issues, when other physicians have overlooked them. They take their time, they listen, and you feel like you are genuinely being taken care of. I see Megha (PA-C) and Dr Ramirez and couldn’t be happier with their care. The rest of the staff is lovely as well, including Lupita, Marbella, Carmen and Satya. Thank you so much ladies. You’re the best!!!
